Vibrato mit dem Saxophon
Vibrato is a refinement of the tone and makes long tones shine through its slight wave-like change in tone frequency.
This frequency change is created by gently changing the approach. The lower lip in its W position changes the pressure on the sheet evenly. The W position opens and closes slightly in response to the vibrato. This creates a light, even “Wow Wow Wow Wow”.
Across the different styles of jazz, there are also different types and sound ideals of vibrato that suit you more or less.
A very common and tasteful type of vibrato is this:
The note is played, held straight and the vibrato is only gently applied in the last third of the note. The sound just fades out towards the end. It is important to start and end the tone with the lower lip in the closed W position, as when the W position is open the tone drops slightly and as a result the intonation of the tone and subsequently the entire piece is lost.
The stronger and more expansive the WowWow movement, the greater the resulting change in frequency, up to and including a shuddering and whining sound – wonderful as a short effect, but as a vibrato it is often too penetrating and no longer nice.
In this case, consciously take control of the strength of the vibrato and simply reduce the movement again.
The rhythmic oscillation of the vibrato in 3 or 4 oscillations results from the context of the song.
Das Vibrato ist eine Veredelung des Tones und bringt durch seine leichte wellenförmige Veränderung der Tonfrequenz lange Töne zum Strahlen.
Erzeugt wird diese Frequenzveränderung durch eine sanfte Veränderung des Ansatzes. Die Unterlippe in ihrer W-Stellung verändert gleichmäßig den Druck auf das Blatt. Dabei öffnet und schließt die W-Stellung leicht in der Schwingung des Vibratos. Dadurch entsteht ein leichtes, gleichmäßiges “Wau wau wau wau”.
Es gibt über die verschiedenen Stilistiken des Jazz auch unterschiedliche Arten und Klangideale des Vibratos, die einem mehr oder weniger zusagen.
Eine sehr gängige und geschmackvolle Art des Vibratos ist folgende:
Der Ton wird angespielt, gerade ausgehalten und erst im letzten Drittel des Tones das Vibrato sanft angesetzt. Der Ton klingt zum Ende hin gerade aus. Dabei ist wichtig, den Ton bei geschlossener W-Stellung der Unterlippe zu beginnen und auch zu beenden, da bei geöffneter W-Stellung der Ton leicht absackt und in der Folge die Intonation des Tones und weiterführend auch des gesamten Stückes verloren geht.
Je stärker und ausladender die WauWau Bewegung ist, umso größer ist die dabei entstehende Frequenzveränderung bis hin zu einem Eiern und Jaulen des Tones – als kurzer Effekt wunderbar, als Vibrato hingegen dann oft zu penetrant und nicht mehr schön.
In diesem Falle die Kontrolle über die Stärke des Vibrato bewusst übernehmen und die Bewegung einfach wieder verkleinern.
Die rhythmische Schwingung des Vibratos in 3er oder 4er Schwingung ergibt sich aus dem Kontext des Songs.
